NVIDIA nTeresting News - November 2, 2012In this issue:
NVIDIA Powers Titan, World's Fastest Supercomputer Titan, which debuted as the world's fastest open-science supercomputer, was completed this month at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. "The system is rated at 20 petaflops, or quadrillion scientific calculations per second-a ten-fold speedup over the Jaguar." That's right, Titan's peak performance is more than 20 petaflops - or 20 million billion floating-point operations per second - about 90 percent of which comes from 18,688 NVIDIA Tesla K20 GPU accelerators. "It's almost mindboggling how fast Titan operates. The system is capable of churning through more than 20,000 trillion calculations each second -- or 20 petaflops -- by using GPUs." The GPUs that supply the horsepower are based on the NVIDIA Kepler architecture, the fastest, most efficient, highest-performance computing architecture ever built. "In a breakthrough that harnesses video-game technology for solving science's most complex mysteries, a U.S. government laboratory today deployed Titan-the fastest, most powerful, and most energy-efficient of a new generation of supercomputers that breach the bounds of "central processing unit" computing." Titan is yet another sign of the broadest long-term trend in high-end computing, parallel computing: finding more and more ways to break up problems into small pieces that can be completed in parallel. Surface: Even Oprah Loves It Windows 8, which includes Windows RT, hit stores last week. It also ushered in the debut of Microsoft's Surface, which has a Tegra chip inside. Surface is an instant hit. "We're here at Microsoft's Windows 8 event and the company's Steven Sinofsky is talking about the tablet-optimized Windows RT operating system. He claims that over 420 million hardware devices are compatible with Windows RT, and many of them will connect with Windows RT right out of the box." Developers have been busy working on their Windows RT applications. "...I see a huge amount of potential and am quite optimistic this device will fill the gap I have between tablet and laptop." It is already one of Oprah's Favorite Things. "It feels like a Mercedes-Benz to me, people!" gushes Oprah in the December issue of O, on newsstands Nov. 6. Her "Favorite Things 2012″ list was released onlineThursday. And if you game on a notebook, you better get GeForce. PC Magazine has a list of the top 10 gaming laptops, and every single one is a GeForce notebook. "As with desktops, the best gaming laptops tend to be configured specifically for gaming performance. That means the best gaming graphics card out there..." And a GeForce laptop brings with it Optimus. "But this custom-built sleeper is driven by Intel's Ivy Bridge i7-3610QM, 8GB of RAM, a 250GB solid state drive, and NVIDIA's GT650 2GB graphics chip with Optimus technology that can handle the latest applications with ease - all weighing in at only 4 lbs (1.8 kg). That's serious firepower inside something that comfortably fits into my backpack." GeForce 600M Series GPUs are excellent DirectX 11 gaming GPUs, with up to twice the DirectX11 performance of competing GPUs. And only NVIDIA GPUs can offer NVIDIA Optimus technology, providing great performance and great battery life.
